What's included in a Gulf package

Beyond the base salary

Gulf salaries are tax-free — but the total package value is typically 40-60% above base. Here's what a typical professional expat package includes at a large employer.

  • Tax-free base salary (no income tax in any GCC country)
  • Housing allowance (typically 20-30% of base) or free accommodation
  • Annual return economy flights for employee and family
  • Private health insurance for employee and dependants
  • End-of-service gratuity (21 days pay per year, or more)
  • Annual bonus (typically 10-30% of base at most employers)
  • Schooling allowance for children (at senior levels)
  • Company car or transport allowance (at many employers)
  • Mobile phone and laptop

On megaprojects (NEOM, Red Sea, Aramco), field roles and camp-based roles often include full accommodation, all meals, and a remote working allowance on top.

Salary guide FAQ

Common salary questions

Yes, completely. All six GCC countries — UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman — levy zero personal income tax. You keep 100% of your salary and commission. This makes Gulf packages worth dramatically more in net terms. A UAE salary of AED 30,000/month is equivalent to roughly £115,000/year gross in the UK after income tax and National Insurance.
Typically yes, but Saudi Arabia has a lower cost of living — particularly for housing, transport, and food. Petrol costs virtually nothing in Saudi Arabia. Senior professionals on Vision 2030 projects often receive compensation packages (including housing, flights, and allowances) that are competitive with or exceed equivalent Dubai roles in total value. Qatar often pays the highest base salaries in the GCC.
End-of-service gratuity (EOSG) is a statutory payment made to employees when they leave a Gulf employer. Under UAE law, it's 21 days' salary per year for the first 5 years, and 30 days' salary per year thereafter. For a 5-year stint on AED 25,000/month, that's AED 87,500 (roughly $24,000) on departure — entirely tax-free. Some employers top this up further.
Yes, particularly at the senior level. Most Gulf employers expect negotiation, especially on allowances and package components. Base salary is sometimes fixed by band, but housing allowance, flight tickets, and signing bonuses are often negotiable. In investment banking, private equity, and tech, total comp is frequently negotiated aggressively. Always ask.
Substantially better in net terms for most senior roles. A London finance professional earning £150,000/year takes home roughly £87,000 after 45% top rate tax and National Insurance. A Dubai equivalent earning AED 50,000/month (≈£163,000/year) takes home every dirham. Add housing, flights, and medical and the real gap is even larger. For mid-career professionals, the Gulf offers a genuine wealth acceleration opportunity.
