Design careers in the Gulf

Why designers choose the Gulf

The Arab world represents one of the most distinctive and underexplored design markets globally. Arabic is spoken by 450 million people, yet most design tools and frameworks are built for left-to-right Latin scripts. Designers who master Arabic typography, RTL layout, and bilingual design systems are genuinely rare and command premium salaries.

Saudi Arabia's entertainment and cultural transformation is creating extraordinary demand for experience designers, brand identity specialists, and spatial designers. NEOM, Diriyah, AlUla, and Qiddiya are all building from scratch β€” creating opportunities for designers to work at a scale and ambiguity rarely found elsewhere.

Dubai Media City and Dubai Design District (d3) are the Arab world's creative hubs. MBC Group, OSN, and major regional agencies all base their creative operations there. The concentration of brands, agencies, and media companies creates a dense market for all design disciplines.

Design jobs FAQ

Not always, but Arabic capability is a meaningful differentiator. For UX roles at international tech companies (Google, Microsoft, Meta Gulf teams), English is sufficient. For consumer brands, media companies, and agencies targeting Arab audiences, Arabic fluency or at least RTL/Arabic typography experience is expected. The most in-demand designers in the region are bilingual.
RTL stands for right-to-left β€” the direction Arabic text flows. Designing for Arabic requires mirroring many UI elements (navigation, icons, text alignment, scroll direction), understanding Arabic typeface rendering, and knowing which elements stay LTR (numbers, logos) within an RTL context. Figma now has strong RTL support. Designers with a portfolio demonstrating genuine Arabic/bilingual UX work are in very short supply.
Figma is the primary tool for UX/UI and product design across all major Gulf employers. Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop remain standard for graphic design and brand work. After Effects is the industry standard for motion. Cinema 4D is used alongside AE for 3D motion. For Arabic typography, designers also need to know relevant Arabic typefaces and how they render across platforms.
Yes, and they're growing. Digital-first Gulf companies (Careem, Noon, Anghami, Bayt) regularly hire remote designers, especially for roles where Arabic language skills matter. Jordan and Egypt have strong design talent pools and many professionals work remotely for UAE and Saudi-based companies. Salary levels for remote roles are typically lower than in-country Dubai or Riyadh positions.
